We visited the place in Chaing Mai where they make those little umbrellas that go in your drink. They make beautiful, full-sized umbrellas, as well.... I was lucky enough to get to see the process:

Step 1: Splitting the wood.

Step 2: Drilling the holes and connecting the inner wooden pieces.

Step 3: Weaving a "netting" to keep the wooden pieces evenly-spaced.

Step 4: Tying string around the edges of the umbrella (like those finished in the background).

Step 5: Ironing round sheets of handmade pressed paper.

Step 6: Gluing the paper on the wooden umbrella frame.

Step 7: Folding the paper edges under.

...annnnnd....VOILA!! Beautiful, handmade umbrellas!
